Ochre and Slate
Inspired by a quiet moment at home with a favourite vase and plant, this piece grew out of a desire to explore the intimate, reflective realm of still life painting. Working with leftover grey paint, the goal was to capture how simple everyday objects can radiate warmth and character against a soft, muted backdrop—turning a familiar domestic vignette into a striking study of form and colour.
Painted on archival paper and mounted onto a wood cradle board, this piece is rich impasto acrylics, using dynamic palette knife techniques to create deep, dimensional textures in the background and the plant. Thick, sculptural strokes give the painting a tactile texture that brings the muted sage foliage to life against the expressive, cool grey background, while delicate layers of glazing were used to create the translucent, radiant glow of the amber vase.
